Are bananas good or bad during weight loss?
DazednConfused asked:
I’m trying to lose weight and have been working hard for the past one month or so. Unfortunately my rate of weight loss won’t go over 1 lb/week. I am trying to cut down on whatever might hurt me in my diet and I was wondering how good or bad bananas are. I eat one everyday about an hour before going to the gym. I just realized 25% or bananas are carbs – is this bad? Should I find another fruit? I am a 23 year old male trying to lose over 50 lbs.

Like all things, moderation. Of course, if you could practice moderation, you would not be worrying about weight loss now.

Bananas are pretty high in sugar. They are certainly better than junk food, but not the best “diet” fruit you could eat.
Check out and type in some different fruits you like. You can find one that has calories that are acceptable, fiber, etc that you may be looking for.

Well, I dont know for males exactly what the facts are, but for women, i know bananas help with weightloss. I’m assuming that it’s the same for males, but of course, sometimes that assumption is not correct.

I think bananas are bad. First they have too much calories, too much carbs and second they can bring you constipation, a really bad one
Good luck with the weight loss!

Look at it this way- if you choose a banana for a snack over a bagel- that’s great. Bananas do have some fat and carbs, but one a day is not enough to matter, especially if you’re working out. Usually when people start a new workout routine it takes at least two months or so to start seeing results, because your metabolism is changing. You may even gain a few pounds at first- but if you keep at it, all of a sudden you’ll see the pounds melt away. Be careful though- 2-3 lbs per week is considered safe. Anything over that and you could be doing more harm than good to your body. So go ahead- eat a banana, and keep up the good work!

You didn’t mention what kind of food plan you are following. Bananas are actually a wonderful source of minerals, vitamin B, potassium and complex carbs. If you are on a diet in which carbs are completely or very restricted, then that could be interfering with your goals. If you are just watching calorie intake/portion sizes, then I really don’t think that a banana a day is the source of your concerns. Have you checked with a doctor about your weight loss? Losing over 50 lbs. is quite an undertaking, if you are trying to go it alone without any guidance. Have you looked into Weight Watchers? They still have one of the most successful plans going, as they don’t restrict you from any particular food, they just teach you how to eat and assist you with learning how to maintain your goal weight once you reach it. You’ve already taken the big step of making the deicsion to take control of your life…that’s half the battle…good luck to you!

Bananas are good carbs so eat all you want of them. You need to eat yourself thin just like some eat their way fat. Good carbs like celery and carrots will never make you fat. Bad carbs like cake will, but you don’t need to know the whole science of glycemic index and load. It is mostly NOT your fault, if you need to lose weight. The way we have been taught to eat is responsible for making obesity the number one health problem in the world (according to Atlantic Monthly magazine) replacing hunger and infectious disease. You need to re-learn how to eat so you can become thin. Not a diet, but diet lifestyle.

Bananas are good workout fuel. One pound per week is a fairly healthy rate for weight loss. You’ll reach your goal in less than a year and you won’t hurt yourself doing it. Losing weight too fast- along with being dangerously unhealthy- is almost never permanent. It takes time for your metabolism to adjust. Keep doing what you have been. Kiwi is another good fruit. Not all carbs are bad, especially if you need energy. Only simple sugar and processed flour carbs are really fattening. Fruit sugar is different from the white sugar that comes in a box.

Hey buddy!
Unless you are cramping, stay away from bananas, they are over a hundred calories a piece. Your best bet is to continue to stay active and keep your calories below 2000 a day. Break this up into about 5 meals of about 400 calories each.
Trust me on this. One of my male clients has lost like 15 pounds in about three weeks by being disciplined and sticking to this plan. While this is exceptional, it shows you that this method works.
I believe this answers your question, but if not let me know.
Good luck with your diet and fitness goals!

Bananas are fine. They are a natural sugar and your body will use it, and they are filling, they have potassium and one a day is perfect! Eat all the fruits you want, we’ve never lost anyone in the hospital because of too many fruits, just fats and processed sugars!
