Atkins Diet Misconceptions: Simply water weight loss?
In this video of the Atkins Diet Misconceptions series, I deal with the myth that Atkineers simply lose water weight. To some, the Atkins Diet is simply a trip to the sauna nothing more or less. (http://www.atkinsexposed.org/atkins/14/Losing_(Water)_Weight.htm)
As with any other “Big Lie,” it of coruse starts with the truth and departs rapidly from it.

During the first two weeks of the Atkins Diet Induction, the body consumes the remaining stored glucose (glycogen) in the muscles. This typically causes the Induction flu symptoms. However after that period of time, the low carb, high fat diet is responsible for greater weight loss of fat mass and greater prevention of muscle loss than any other diet. I have documented in prior videos the studies that have proven these facts. Here is just one article (Very-low-carbohydrate diets and preservation of muscle mass, Nutrition & Metabolism 2006, http://www.nutritionandmetabolism.com/content/3/1/9 )
There is no way my 211 weight loss was simply 25.3 gallons of water weight loss. My Body Fat percent dropped 35 percent over the course, and my bench press amount increased 50 pounds. That is not simply water leaving the body.

There is generally no way to spot reduce or NOT spot reduce body fat. It comes off where the body determines — usually last on first off. As for not losing it, how about working on the muscles underneath with squats and other accentuate the positive shape.

hello i was wondering will you lose your **** with this diet? if you do what can you do to not lose it?

For the skeptics out there, that’s why Dr. Atkins encouraged doing a ph test on yourselves daily to see if your burning fat and not water. Believe me Dr. A knew what he was doing. Remember he was a Dr.

I agree with newbirth..I guess I’ve lost 60 pounds of water. LOL. This way of eating really works! We need to just do what works best for each of us! Try to block the negative comments. Happy holidays everyone !

The response in those situations would typically be just stored glucose as glycogen which is mostly just water. I agree its sort of like alcohol in that the body will burn it through it quick, and get back to burning fat after the dalliance is over.

Yep you are right. You are burning either stored or dietary fat for energy.
They take pot shots at Atkins and other ketogenic diet for other reasons. The thing that always irked me is how they use this argument to dismiss the success and hard work of others who have achieved or are achieving success. Not so much for my success because I already made it, but for those likely to get self-doubt by one more well-meaning friend. Weight loss is hard enough without those people in your life.

I know its phenomenal. (sarcasm mode on) Obese people don’t need a diet. They need a spigot! I love how others discount the success of others in reclaiming their health. (sarcasm mode off)

I suspect that by living with glycogen depleted muscles one has a protective buffer that may make cheating once a year on the holidays less harmful.

Don’t you lose a tremendous amount of water
the first week on any weight loss plan?
Maintaining ketosis means you are using your own fat for fuel, correct?
So you do indeed lose fat on Atkins and other low carb plans, not just water.

That’s just reflection off the snow messing with camera white balance.
The only good part about snow is the built-in exercise that comes with it. I have done 2 hours of weight training twice this week clearing my driveway of ice and snow. It also makes running outside all the more fun as now watching my footing and dodging snow ploughs become all the more important.

Yep the PETA and PCRN are just never going to accept this way of eating works. Even when they say they accept it *for you*, they are quick to rip it in the next sentence.
Very true about other dieting losing water weight – they just lose less. (As well as losing less otherwise
– just kidding )

On EVERY diet everyone loses some “water weight” The notion that it is only on the Atkins diet that water weight loss takes place is highly misleading!
The stats don’t lie when it comes to the long term success people have on the Atkins diet.
No matter how much groups like PEDA **** it the Atkins diet trumps all other diets hands down!
